- Arts Alive!! Woodcarver Jerry Waite carves the 2009 Nisse Christmas Ornaments
- Sat. Oct. 10th Jerry Waite, local woodcarver will carve the second in the series of Christmas Nisses. This time Mrs. Nisse. Nisses are mythical creatures of Scandinavian folklore that live in rural districts. They controlled the forces of nature and, in turn, a farmers fortune. In the old days, people believed that the Nisses took care of their homes and animals and, kept them out of harms way. A Christmas tradition requires farm families to put out a bowl of rice pudding to please their Nisses.
Enjoy visiting with Jerry and seeing his work. Oct 10th, 10 to 5. Enjoy refreshments, treat and rice pudding. His work is for purchase in our store.

- Artist’s painting of Door County icons available at Door County Interiors & Design
- Local artist Karin Miller-Knutson has released a limited edition print of Door County icons to Door County Interiors & Design in Egg Harbor.
The lively and colorful work is entitled, “Your Door County.”
The signed photo giclee print (50 available) shows the Peninsula, surrounding islands and waters. Also presented in the 21 by 28 inch piece, done in watercolor and ink, are symbols and Miller-Knutson’s own writing that communicates festivals, lighthouses, parks, towns and more. Activities such as arts events, eating ice cream, a ferry ride and a roaring fish boil are also among the things depicted.
The painting and prints were specially commissioned by Carol Trimberger of Door County Interiors & Design, who said customers desire home accents that show the entire look and feel of the area.
“Karin has included the essence of Door County, and she is a local artist doing this,” Trimberger said. “And her handwriting is amazing.”
Miller-Knutson, who hails from Racine, associates her aptitude for art and the pretty look of the writing on this particular piece to her background as a civil engineer for 15 years. She has a home studio in Sturgeon Bay.
“I’m articulate. I pay attention to detail, but I like things to be colorful and fun, too,” said Miller-Knutson, who also paints landscapes.
As to her process, Miller-Knutson said she first envisioned everything to include and then worked with pencil, ink and watercolor. She encourages viewers to look closely at “Your Door County” for their own personal favorite things to do and see.
”At the very top it shows a scuba diver. I used to scuba dive some of the shipwrecks. And on the bottom of the print, in southern Door, there’s a horseback rider. I’ve rode the Ahnapee Trail. And I love lighthouses. And the parks are beautiful. To me, Door County is all that—the natural things,” she said.
The print sells for $169 unframed and $369 framed at Door County Interiors & Design. “We have already sold the print to people who have a home in Florida and are going to keep it there as a reminder of their Door County home,” Trimberger said. Door County Interiors & Design is a home furnishings and accessories store and interior design resource located at 7266 Hwy. 42, about two miles south of downtown Egg Harbor. - Door County Interiors & Design adds Wisconsin-made lath art to its collection
- Door County Interiors & Design has acquired from a Wisconsin artist two large-scale art pieces in a style called lath art.
Richard Waite, of Delafield, Wis., depicts Door County’s Cana Island Lighthouse and Eagle Bluff Lighthouse in colorful 24-by-24-inch framed pieces made from sections of white pine.
“He did this out of little pieces of wood, and it is like a mosaic,” said Ron Trimberger of Door County Interiors & Design.
Lath art is a form of woodworking folk art. Waite said that he created patterns for the lighthouses, inspired by his own images. Then, he took a small ban saw and jig saw to the wood. He painted the pieces with acrylics before gluing them together and framing. The artist said he aimed for a three-dimensional effect by using different thicknesses of wood.
Waite is a former home builder, who has taken on lath art as a hobby. He is also inspired by sailing on the Great Lakes and seeing lighthouses along the way.
“And I also have as a hobby photography, and I take lots of photographs of lighthouses on the Great Lakes. It was a great period of history on the Great Lakes--or anywhere else—about 100 years ago, when the lighthouses were very important,” he said. The Cana Island Lighthouse is done in red and brown with a bright blue sky and even wood seagulls flying around. The Eagle Bluff Lighthouse has colors of blue, red, brown and green.
Door County Interiors & Design is exhibiting the lath art, which is available for sale, in the coastal area of the store. But Carol Trimberger, of the store, said they really can be displayed in an interior with any decorating style.
“It is folk art, and it is so original. It moves across lines of design and can go with transitional, cottage, the lodge look or coastal. He really did a good job with these and is so involved in doing it,” she said.
Waite often visits his brother, Jerry Waite, of Sturgeon Bay, who also works with wood, carving stunning swans, loons and more. “And my daughter did lath art for a while. And I could see what she was doing,” Richard Waite said.
